My love for all things crafty started as a young child. I became inspired and encouraged by the women in my life. My mother always encouraged me to practice my artistic talents in a variety of ways (drawing, making potholders, jewelry, stamp art, even finger paints). My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was about 9 or 10 years old, and I started out making doll clothing in 4H. I went through several crafting phases (sewing, crocheting, painting), however, these days I am enamored with home décor. My love for beautiful interior furnishings was passed down by my other grandmother and aunts.
I consider myself to be a "handy-woman", just ask my husband. I am usually tasked with traditionally masculine roles around the house (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, flooring). My competency with power tools has proven useful when working on crafts and fun projects. I get inspired by pieces of furniture and quirky decorations that have seen better days. The idea of salvaging once-loved furnishings and returning their former glory is so romantic and appealing to me. I am a full-time instructor at Ball State University; besides teaching, I spend my free time doing what I love- creating pretty things. |
